Our hand-forged fire striker is made of high carbon steel and modelled after medieval originals. The ends of the fire steel are rolled.
Striking the fire steel against the sharp edge of a flint generates sparks which ignite the dry tinder and make it smoulder. So-called tinder fungi were usually used as tinder: These mushroom-like bracket fungi were harvested from the tree trunks and soaked in a nitrous solution or rubbed with black powder to allow them to kindle.
