This artfully hand-forged pair of scissors is a versatile prop for historical re-enactments from various eras.

Each half of the scissors was forged from a single continuous piece of steel, and the two halves were then riveted together at the centre. The elegantly curved shanks with finely twisted ends form large finger holes, ensuring a secure and comfortable grip, even for larger hands. For added comfort, the handles are wrapped in leather. The visible forging marks have been intentionally preserved, giving the scissors a rustic and authentic character. These medieval-style scissors are fully functional and feature sharpened blades.

One of the earliest known scissor types is the so-called spring or bow scissor, which can be traced back to around the 5th century BC among the Celts of the La Tène culture in Central Europe. The pivoted scissors commonly used today, with two crossing blades, likely originated in the Roman Empire. Although spring scissors remained in use for a long time, pivoted scissors became widespread in Europe during the High Middle Ages. A vivid example of these shears can be seen in the so-called Tailor’s Window in Freiburg Minster, Germany, dating from the 13th century. In terms of basic design and functionality, they have remained virtually unchanged since then and continue to be used in a wide range of forms to this day.

This finely crafted piece of blacksmithing is not only a practical tool for everyday life at medieval markets and reenactment or living history events, but also a beautiful, decorative prop for any medieval seamstress, herb woman or barber surgeon.

Please note:
Above specs may slightly vary from piece to piece. As this is a hand-forged product, each pair of scissors is a very unique piece and slight variations in shape and/or surface finish are quite normal. Above pictures are thus for reference only.

The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain the scissors on a regular basis, for example by using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
