This oil lamp is based on an original artefact discovered at the Sutton Hoo ship burial in Suffolk, England. The iron lamp dates from the early Anglo-Saxon period, around the 7th century. The original is now part of the collection at the British Museum in London.
Like the historical original, this replica consists of a round, slightly curved bowl supported by a three-legged iron frame. The three supports are held together beneath the bowl by a circular collar and extend into gently curved legs. The slightly flattened feet provide a stable base. The lamp can be used with either wax or oil and suitable wicks, casting a warm, atmospheric light.
The oil lamp is not only a stylish decorative piece for your home, but also an excellent prop for medieval markets, LARP and reenactment events.
