This Viking round shield featuring a dragon ship design combines the characteristic shape of an early medieval round shield with a striking depiction of a Viking longship. Measuring approximately 60 cm in diameter, the wooden shield features a two-tone design: a light, weathered-looking upper section contrasts with the warm wood tones of the lower half. Across the surface is a bold graphic depiction of a Viking ship with a dragon-headed prow, accompanied by stylised shields and oars.
Crafted from approx. 13 mm thick plywood, this Viking shield stands out with its detailed craftsmanship. In its centre, the shield features a generously sized steel boss that is tightly held in place with four rivets, and leaves enough space to accommodate even stout Viking hands. The shield’s edge is clad with rawhide (parchment), and the back is fitted with three riveted reinforcement slats made of wood. The central slat also officiates as a handle and is leather-wrapped in its middle section for a comfortable grip.
The longship depicted on the shield represents one of the most recognisable motifs associated with the Viking Age. Viking longships enabled Norse seafarers to travel across rivers and open seas and became an enduring symbol of Viking exploration and maritime culture. The ship shown here features a stylised dragon head at the prow, while rows of shields and oars complete the maritime design.
